Men's Skin

When you think about soft skin care, you generally think or see
women's products. Men actually have just as sensitive skin as
women, but because we are supposed to be tough, we don't
discuss our skin problems like women, but we do have them. I've
worked in the automotive business for nearly twenty years and if
you know any mechanics, then you know chemicals dry out your
hands and make them tough like alligators. In the past, men used
to have a serious problem when it came to finding a product to
treat dry skin, blemishes, dark circles under the eyes, and alligator
hands. As a psyche major, my wife is always telling me that
physical appearance, including your skin, plays an enormous role
in determining how others perceive us. First impressions,
unfortunately, are skin-deep, so it pays to look your best.

Treating your skin right isn’t just about scrubbing with a good soap
and splashing on some after shave.

Facial Cleansing

Men's skin care should start with a good cleanser, just like
women's skin care. Water soluble (special soaps) cleansers are
best. This helps remove the dirt, grease, pollutants, and
substances we transfer from our hands to our face. This will help
prevent pores from clogging, which causes acne. Men with oily
facial skin should pay special attention to cleansing the face more
than once a day. Oh, and at least once a week use a facial scrub
or ex-foliant that sloughs off dead skin. After all, men's skin can
glow and look radiant too!

Shaving

Since men's facial skin care revolves around shaving, here's a few
tips for a clean close shave that will help you prevent rash, nicks,
and ingrown hairs:

    1) First, facial hair is more easily removed when it has been
wet for about 5 minutes or more. Shaving after a shower is
best. If you use acne cream, apply after shaving.
    2) Liberally apply a good shaving foam/gel/or cream.
    3) With a smooth action, pull the razor in a downward
motion, in the direction of hair growth. In other words, hair
should be cut flush with the surface of the skin, don't rake
the razor across the face. Swivel-headed razors along with 3
bladed razors reduce nicks and cuts.
    4) Shave the skin in a relaxed position, contorting the face
or stretching it until it is taut will cause skin rash, ingrown
    hairs, and abrasions.
    5) If you use an electric shaver, leaving the hair a little
longer, but still close, and shaving twice a day will reduce
    rash, ingrown hairs, and abrasions.
    6) Apply aftershave and skin moisturizer (and/or acne
    cream).

How do you choose the shaving product best for your skin? First,
determine your skin type. Get a facial, they will let you know if
you're not sure. Men's skin is generally oilier, thicker, has larger
pores, and has more active sebaceous glands. Frequent shaving
and alcohol-based aftershaves dry out the skin, which is why men
need a moisturizer just as much, if not more than women.
Moisturizers or after-shaves should be patted over the face gently,
then massaged upward. If you work outdoors or are outdoors a lot,
you should consider a good sunscreen to protect your skin from
damaging UV rays.

A daily regimen like this is not difficult and only takes a few minutes
a day. The reward is younger, healthier looking skin. Take care of
it, your skin has to last a lifetime, and what you DON'T do for it will
begin to show before you are old.

Lips

Are your lips kissable? No woman wants to kiss rough lips. Thick or
thin, keep them moisturized. I have to use lip balm daily. Some of
you may need to do the same!

Dark circles under the eyes

Why can't I get rid of the raccoon look? Dark circles under the
eyes are caused by broken blood vessels under the skin. The
broken blood vessels can be caused by an iron deficiency,
alcohol, smoking, heredity, and caffeine containing drinks like
coffee, tea, and sodas. Eye creams like vitamin K creams and ZIRH
Restore Herbal Eye Cream can be effective in eliminating dark
circles. If you've tried everything and they still won't go away, you
may want to see your doctor.

Acne

Cleansing (not with soap, it dries out the skin and causes the skin
to produce more oil), facials, and masks help. There are literally
hundreds of products that claim they work on acne. More effective
products contain clay (absorbs oil). More serious acne problems
require a prescription. Be sure to follow the instructions for best
results.

Hands & Feet

Do you have alligator hands and big-foot's feet? You not alone.
As I said, working in chemicals around the automotive industry can
reek havoc on the skin, especially the hands. There are a few
products on the market that ex-foliate dead, dry, scaly skin and
leave smooth soft skin.

Body - dry skin

Pamper your body. Women love skin and not just their own. Use a
daily moisturizer or lotion.

Listen, we all like to go out now and then, so keep your skin fresh
and clean. If you're looking for a date, remember, she won't look
twice if you don't take care of yourself.
